Thinking about how to your academic discipline in a non-academic setting? We can help...
Many people leave university without considering how they could use their discipline skills beyond academia – perhaps because they don’t even know about them. Careers events are a good way for students to understand their options. In support of that, we’ll be attending the Cambridge University Scientific Society event on 3rd February. Innovation Consultant Dr Gareth Steed will be talking to natural sciences students about the use of scientific skills in non-academic career paths: specifically, innovation consultancy.
We’re aware our corner of the working world, Innovation Consultancy, can sound buzzwordy. The terms are niche and overlap with some broadly defined normal human words. That’s one of the reasons why we’re so keen to attend – we know how helpful it can be in helping graduates figure out their next steps and areas of interest! Gareth will talk about how our work helps companies make new things, solve problems, and change the world for the better. He’ll also be covering what it’s really like working here, what sort of skills we look for, and how to find out when vacancies open.
Gareth came to Innovia Technology after an undergraduate degree in biochemistry, time as a science teacher and a PhD and post-doctoral study researching plant genetics and growth. At Innovia, he specialises in agriculture and molecular biology on top of the rounded innovation perspective all our consultants offer. He is still waiting for a project addressing the circadian rhythm in wheat. He said:
‘I have a soft spot for helping people discover their passion, and I hope that the information I can share about how research works in industry and consultancy can help some new graduates find jobs that are right for them.’
If you’re at Cambridge University, drop by and talk to Gareth – it might be the spark that lights your path.
